We love serving cranberry sauce as a sweet side with our holiday meals -- but, traditional cranberry sauce can be a little too sweet. This year we decided to try something new – cranberry chutney.
This recipe for cranberry chutney was simple to prepare -- all the ingredients go in one pot, and cook for about 30 minutes. And, to save time during the busy holiday season, it can be made 2-3 days in advance.
My cranberry chutney is healthier than traditional cranberry sauce - it has more fruit and vegetables, and half the sugar. The finished product has a great sweet-tangy flavor, with garam masala and red pepper flakes giving it an extra kick. If you don’t have garam masala, you can substitute allspice or curry powder instead.
Julie’s Cranberry Chutney is a great side dish to serve with roasted turkey, chicken, or pork. It’s also an excellent complement to cheese, such as low-fat yogurt or cheese. Happy Holidays!

While I am sure this recipe is tasty, most people have never heard of garam masala, never mind have it in their spice cabinet. I would think USDA would be promoting recipes that have common ingredients or at least show a replacement spice.
Garam Marsala can be found in most grocery stores and if folks like chutney or other Indian foods, they will be delighted to find of the most important spices. Wouldn't it be amazing to have more people celebrating Indian foods. After all, who knew about chipotle 10 years ago?

It was something I was thinking about when sharing this recipe, so you'll notice that the blog post includes a recommendation for alternative spices to use (such as allspice or curry powder). Also, you can omit the spice, and the recipe will still be tasty!
