Powering Prosperity: Bioeconomy Policy to Stimulate Growth

PREMISE

Innovative energy technologies, advanced bio-based production and material-to-market systems continue to strengthen the bioeconomy. Bio-based materials and fuels are promising substitutes for hydrocarbons in energy and manufacturing processes, but the emerging bioeconomy needs favorable market conditions and a coordinated energy and industrial policy to realize its potential. At this point in the industry's maturation, it is critical to take stock of where the industry has been successful, what it has accomplished, and how it can become more integrated in the future.

To realize economic development, energy security, and environmental goals, policies must be adaptive to the rapidly changing marketplace and account for implications of volatile oil prices, shale gas, and policy uncertainties, while also strengthening risk-mitigation strategies. A comprehensive approach is required; one that grows both the demand and supply sides of the bioeconomy, while recognizing the complementarity among bio-based fuels for transportation, heating and electricity-and biochemicals. Expert economists and industry leaders ponder on critical issues and then take a deep-dive into an industry success story.
