Meteorologists in USDA’s World Agricultural Outlook Board (WAOB) provide weather assessments and real-time yield intelligence for global crop conditions in support of the monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demands Estimates (WASDE) report. The group also briefs USDA Secretarial staff on weather impacting both international and domestic crop production and represent the Department in other activities requiring expertise in assessing the impacts of weather and climate on agriculture, including representation in the Commission for Agricultural Meteorology within the United Nation’s World Meteorological Organization.

WAOB’s meteorologists are responsible for the publication of the Weekly Weather and Crop Bulletin in partnership with the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center. Since 1999, meteorologists have provided significant support for the development and publication of the U.S. Drought Monitor (including authorship), which has provided a basis for approving billions of dollars in disaster relief payments to U.S. producers.
