Every time I explore a farmers market I become a kid again. It brings back memories of snacking on sun-ripened figs from my backyard with dad or squeezing for perfectly ripe tomatoes at the neighborhood farm stand with mom. The existence, uniqueness and vibrancy of farmers markets can be a positive experience full of exploration and deliciousness for any age. It sure is for me.

USDA is committed to helping all of America’s children, families and communities not only have access to healthy affordable food, but form positive associations with these healthy foods. Visiting a farmers market offers a unique learning environment where you can be introduced to fresh, local produce; a variety of sights, tastes and smells; as well as meet neighbors, farmers and vendors.

If you’ve never been to a farmers market—or if you haven’t been in a while—National Farmers Market Week August 3-9, is a perfect time to make the trip. It’s a time to celebrate the 8,100+ farmers markets across the United States, the farmers who make them possible and the communities that host them.  If you’re in the DC area, stop by the USDA Farmers Market on Friday, August 8 to see how USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is celebrating.

If you can’t join us in DC, use the National Farmers Market Directory to find a market in your area. And if you run a market, consider planning events that engage kids before they head back to school. The Farmers Market Coalition has great tools and resources online to help you plan your market’s activities.

And one more thing…

In celebration of NFMW we invite you to unleash your inner child. Show us why you love the farmers and vendors that make your local market great! Share your favorite farmers market memory, a picture with a farmer, your favorite produce, or a simple selfie at the market. Be creative and silly. Tag the photo with #FarmMktWk @USDA. Anywhere you go, visit one and enjoy. Become a kid again.

For National Farmer's Market week, NRCS, in Lincoln, NE will be hosting a Farmer's Market in the Denney building's Lobby. The Gardeners in the building may bring in their excess produce in trade for other produce. If they don't have produce to bring in they can bring in non-perishables for the Feds Feeds Families campaign. Any excess produce at the end of the day will be donated to the People's City Mission. Happy Gardening!

Salem NH Farmers Market "TV personalities" Jane Lang, market manager, and me are appearing on WMUR's Cook's Corner, NH's ABC affiliate this Saturday and promoting both National Farmers Market Week and the start of NH Eat Local. We've been featured on Cook's Corner about 10 times over the last year and our goal is to educate more consumers about eating local and supporting our local farmers and vendors.

We are hosting our first Farm-to-Fork Community Cookout on Sunday to celebrate and many of our farmers and vendors are providing side dishes and desserts to accompany fresh grilled burgers, sausages and Panini.

We have guest chefs from our local Williams-Sonoma store throughout the month of August helping to highlight our produce.

Also beginning this week, we are offering SNAP/EBT card holders a $1 for $1 Match up to $10 through a grant we received through the New Hampshire Farmer's Market Association. Our goal is to help increase accessibility for all members of our local communities.

The recent news affecting a regional supermarket (Market Basket) has created a surge in our farmers market attendance and Facebook fans! The timing with National Farmers Week is great foodie karma.

Well, the Worcester Art Museum is going above and beyond celebrating National Farmers Market week... we love farmers markets so much, that since mid July, the Worcester Art Museum has decided to reach out to our local community and host a weekly themed art + market event on Saturdays which runs until Sept 20th. We offer a variety of art, craft, food, music and more each week. more info at
The theme this week is Worcester Youth Groups and we will be celebrating the diverse and bountiful opportunities that the local farmers markets offer in Worcester. We have farmers markets everyday of the week during this time... and 3 markets to choose from on Saturdays! How awesome is that!

For Farmer's Market week, USDA Rural Development and a group of other federal partners (BLM, Bureau of Reclamation, USGS, BIA and Federal Highway Administration)joined together to support a gleaning effort at the Carson City Farmer's Market, in Nevada's capitol city. We collected 435 pounds of donated and gleaned produce which was donated to the Ron Wood FAmily Resource Center, a local food pantry that provides emergency rations to 425 families each week.
