In honor of National Homeownership Month, USDA Rural Development (RD) and the Biden-Harris Administration will highlight stories of how our programs have helped people in rural, Tribal, and underserved communities buy, repair and build homes, and pay their rent. As small towns and communities face the challenges of rising housing costs, this kind of support is now more critical than ever.

We know that well-built, energy efficient, affordable housing is essential to the vitality of communities in rural and Tribal America. Through single family, multi-family, rental assistance, home repair and other programs, RD is here to improve rural livability in the United States.

This month, we’ll share inspiring stories about families and individuals who used RD programs to become homeowners, like a family in Colorado who lived in a school bus until a guaranteed loan made homeownership possible, or the agency’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity that helped families in rural Wisconsin, New Jersey and Tennessee repair and modernize their homes to make them safer, healthier places to live. Watch for stories from Maine to New Mexico about RD’s partnerships with Tribal organizations and stories about families in Texas who have benefited from funding under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. We’ll also share how RD is helping to meet critical housing needs for people living in socially vulnerable rural communities.

We also know that while homeownership is a good fit for many, plenty of people in rural areas engage with their community by renting a home. Look for stories from us about how RD programs have helped people across rural America pay their rent, build wealth, and invest in their communities.

Since 1949, RD’s Single Family Housing (SFH) Programs such as the SFH Guaranteed Loan and the SFH Direct Home Loan programs have helped nearly five million families and individuals achieve the dream of homeownership. For families whose homes are in need of essential repairs, RD offers the SFH Repair Loans and Grants Programs. RD also has a Multifamily Housing Program to increase access to affordable multifamily rental housing opportunities in rural America.

All month long, we’ll post blogs and stories about these programs and how to apply for them. Follow us on social media and visit our website for success stories, photos, news and information on how RD can help make your dream of homeownership come true.
