2024 Entity-Scale Methods Report Errata
This page lists corrections made to the 2nd edition of USDA’s Quantifying Greenhouse Gas Fluxes in Agriculture and Forestry: Methods for Entity Scale Inventory since the publication of the report in April 2024.

Chapter 0: Executive Summary
Page ES-14
Error: A duplicate of page ES-12 was printed on page ES-14. The table on page ES-14 was not included in the original publication.
Correction: The correct table now appears on page ES-14.
Pages ES-16, 17, 18
Error: The allometric equations in Chapter 5 were updated to reflect the National Scale Volume Biomass estimators adopted by the USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis program in 2023. This was not reflected in the silviculture practices and improved forest management citation in the table on Page ES-16.
Correction: The citation has been updated to Westfall et al. 2024.
Error: The methodological options in Chapter 5 were updated so that they are no longer based on landowner size, but instead how offer a range of methodological options referred to as Levels, which users may select based on the precision needed, user capability, and data availability. Chapter 5 now also includes a workbook tool to simplify the newly introduced Level 1 calculations. These changes were not reflected in the Forestry tables on pages ES-16, 17, and 18.
Correction: The tables on pages ES-16, 17, and 18 have been updated to note the new delineation of methodological options into Levels, and the creation of an Excel workbook tool to simplify Level 1 calculation.
Chapter 3: Quantifying Greenhouse Gas Sources and Sinks in Cropland and Grazing Land Systems
Page 3-17
Error: Equation 3-4 was modified in response to reviewer comments, which introduced an error. The published method for total woody tree biomass carbon stocks is:
W=exp[ln(biomass_abvg)+biomass_blwg]×M×F_C.
This incorrectly directs users to backtransform the sum of ln(biomass_abvg)+biomass_blwg, however below ground biomass should not be in log space.
Correction: The total woody tree biomass carbon stock method on page 3-17 has been rewritten, and is now printed as:
W=([biomas_abvg]+[biomass_blwg])×M×F_C
This method now correctly directs users to back transform the ratio before multiplying by above ground biomass to get below ground biomass.
Page 3-20
Error: In equation 3-6, the method for calculating below ground woody tree biomass stocks, the ratios for both course roots and fine roots were not in log space, which produces erroneous results.
Correction: The new method for equation 3-6 now correctly directs users to transform the sum of the coarse root ratio and fine root ratio into log space.
Chapter 4: Quantifying Greenhouse Gas Sources and Sinks in Animal Production Systems
Page 4-32
Error: Figure 4-4 incorrectly directs users to use equation 4-19 to determine the total nitrogen entering manure storage and treatment (TNstorage). This figure should direct users to equations 4-15 or 4-20 for TNstorage.
Correction: Figure 4-4 has been revised to reference equations 4-15 and 4-20.
Error: Figure 4-4 on page 4-32 directs users interested in determining nitrogen excretion to Equation 4-20. This is incorrect. The equation used to determine nitrogen excretion is equation 4-21.
Correction: Figure 4-4 has been revised to reference equation 4-21.
Page 4-34
Error: When using equation 4-18 to calculate indirect N2O emissions, users are intended to use the variables for population (Pop) and total nitrogen excretion (Nex) for emissions from housing, and total nitrogen entering manure storage and treatment (TNstorage) for emissions from manure management. The wording of equation 4-18 did not make this entirely clear, which could result in the misapplication of the method by users.
Correction: Equation 4-18 was revised to include two scenarios for indirect N2O emissions, one for housing emissions that includes animal population and total nitrogen excretion, and one for manure management that uses TNstorage.
Page 4-43
Error: Equation 4-27 contains a typo in the N retention equation, which states G, instead of GS.
Correction: The text in equation 4-27 has been corrected to now say GS.
Page 4-56
Error: Indirect N2O estimates were excluded from aerobic lagoons.
Correction: Text was added to the box at the top of page 4-56 to clarify that NH3-N lost from aerobic lagoons is used to calculate the indirect N2O emissions. In the Nitrous Oxide section on page 4-56, text was also added that directs users to use equation 4-18 to calculate indirect N2O emissions.
Chapter 5: Quantifying Greenhouse Gas Sources and Sinks in Managed Forest Systems
Excel workbook tool
Error: Minor formatting issues were found in the Excel workbook tool used to generate Level 1 emissions, including an issue where cells in the results tab were not displaying correctly.
Correction: The Excel workbook tool formatting was changed to fix the issue. Cells now appear as intended in the workbook tool.
