Is a USDA internship a paid position?

USDA internships are unpaid. Applicants are encouraged to contact their educational institution or relevant non‑profit organizations for potential funding or academic support. Any outside income, funding, or housing assistance received during a USDA internship may require prior approval.

What are the hours of a USDA internship?

Most USDA internships follow a standard Monday–Friday schedule, typically between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Some flexibility may be available for interns with academic or program requirements. To be considered full‑time, interns are generally expected to work the equivalent of 4.5 days per week, with limited adjustments permitted when appropriate.

Is specific USDA intern housing available?

No. USDA interns are responsible for arranging their own housing for the duration of the internship.

Is political preference a deciding factor in the application review process?

No. Political preference is not considered during the application review process. It is essential, however, that applicants are committed to the mission and values of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, including service to farmers, rural communities, and the American public.

Do I need to be a current student or college graduate to apply?

You do not need to be currently enrolled in school or have a college degree to apply for the USDA Internship Program. Applicants must simply be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years old at the time of application. The program welcomes individuals from a wide range of educational and professional backgrounds who are committed to public service.

Is this an in‑person or remote internship?

The USDA Internship Program is an in‑person experience based in Washington, D.C. Interns are expected to work onsite at the USDA Whitten Building, where they will participate in day‑to‑day operations, collaborate with staff, and engage directly in the agency’s mission. Remote participation is not offered for this program.

Can I mail a hard copy of my application?

No. USDA does not accept hard‑copy applications. Only applications submitted through the official online application portal will be reviewed.

Who should serve as my references?

Applicants must provide at least two references who can speak to their qualifications, character, and commitment to public service. Strong references often include professors, supervisors, mentors, or community leaders who know the applicant’s work ethic well. Please include each reference’s full contact information so the USDA Internship Program can reach out to them. While optional, recommendation letters addressed to the USDA Internship Program may be uploaded as a PDF through the application portal.

Will I be penalized if my recommendation is sent in late?

Yes. All application materials—including contact information for two references—must be submitted by the stated application deadline. Because applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, applicants are encouraged to submit their materials as early as possible.
