What We Do

Safety, Sustainability and Emergency Operations Division (SSEOD)

The mission of SSEOD is to maintain and perform all occupational health and safety related functions in the National Capital Region (NCR), which includes conducting safety assessments, indoor air assessments, hazardous material/waste storage, investigating workplace injuries/illnesses, and monitoring nursing mothers rooms. Four key objectives of SSEOD is to 1) prevent workplace hazards by identifying, assessing, and controlling workplace hazards before they result in harm or damage 2) legal compliance by ensuring that the Department complies with requirements set forth by Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) regulations 3) promoting employee well-being by fostering and educating employees on occupational health and safety guidelines 4) reduce costs by reducing accidents and injuries, possibly reducing costs associated with medical expenses and compensation claims. SSEOD also provides contract oversight of commercial vendors, small businesses and state licensing agencies who provide full-service cafeterias, diners, deli’s, snack shops, and vending services in the GWCC, South and Whitten Buildings for USDA employees and visitors.
